Our Leaders

John Sperling with ukulele

Leader

John Sperling

John is a long-standing B.U.G. member and strum-along coordinator. He is also B.U.G.’s resident ukulele string expert and a great resource for helping to diagnose that weird buzzing sound you can’t figure out.

At the meet-ups, strike up a conversation about: ukes of all sizes, strings, river rafting, Boulder in the 60s, Bob Dylan and woodworking.

Charlie Martien with ukulele

Leader

Charlie Martien

Charlie leads the strum-alongs at B.U.G. along with support from his band mates in Twisted Strings to include John Sperling and his wife Leslie. He has explored many uke styles and enjoys opportunities for fingerpicking and soloing.

At the meet-ups, strike up a conversation about: favorite ukulele players, cowboy poets, 10th Mountain division huts, best hiking and snowshoe trails and interesting song trivia.

Sarah Goodroad playing ukulele

Sarah Goodroad

Our Founder

Sarah Goodroad is a classical cellist by training, played bass guitar in rock and punk bands, and was a Deejay for public and Top 40 radio stations. One day, she found a ukulele in her Grandparents' basement and that started her on a new journey. She began learning and then teaching ukulele and in 2010, she founded the Boulder Ukulele Group, a community group of musicians who met once a month to sing and play. She led the group for ten years.

Sarah is a Colorado native and is passionate about the power of music to transform lives and create friendships among unlikely friends.

A Community Group of Musicians Since 2010

Our History

Sarah founded the Boulder Ukulele Group in 2010, with humble beginnings as the featured Saturday morning Notes and Oats on stage at the Rock ‘n Soul Cafe in Boulder, Colorado. She led the group once a month for ten great years and is grateful to John and Charlie for taking the helm, continuing the monthly strum-along tradition and creating a community of folks raising voices in song and putting good uke vibes into the world.
